The house was built in 1883 for James Carter, son of George Carter.
George Carter was St Marys most successful grain merchant. The house is one of four mansions built for George Carter's family on the block bounded by Jones, Peel, Elgin and King Streets.
James Carter became President of George Carter, Son and Company. In 1905 he committed suicide.

Rectory
The James Carter house faces the Rectory at the back of the St James Anglican Church. The Rectory was built in 1889. In 2003 it became the offices of an accounting firm.
